Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Harbhajan Singh has taken a significant step towards improving healthcare in Punjab by urging the Union Health Minister, JP Nadda, to convert the BBMP Hospital in Talwara into a Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) Satellite or an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) facility.
This request comes in response to the deteriorating condition of the existing hospital and the urgent need for enhanced medical services in the region.
Harbhajan Singh, who transitioned from being a celebrated cricketer to a politician, emphasised the critical need for upgraded healthcare facilities in Talwara, a town in Punjab. The current BBMP Hospital, with its 100-bed capacity and a large number of quarters built for employees, is in a state of decline.
Singh highlighted that the hospital's deteriorating condition has left many residents of Punjab, especially those from Talwara and surrounding areas, with no choice but to travel to Delhi or Chandigarh for medical treatment. This long journey, he pointed out, often results in tragic outcomes, with patients losing their lives before they can reach these distant cities for urgent care.
Singh's appeal to the Union Health Minister is rooted in the desire to provide timely and accessible healthcare to the people of Punjab. By converting the BBMP Hospital into a PGI Satellite or AIIMS facility, it would not only serve the local population but also extend its services to neighbouring states such as Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The location of Talwara, on the border of Punjab, makes it an ideal spot for a healthcare hub that can cater to multiple states.
During his meeting with JP Nadda on Thursday, Singh reiterated the dire need for modern medical equipment and well-trained doctors at the BBMP Hospital.
He stressed that upgrading the hospital would be a matter of humanity, ensuring that people in the region have access to the necessary healthcare services without having to embark on long and often perilous journeys. Singh expressed hope that the government would consider his request seriously and take swift action to improve the healthcare infrastructure in the area.
The Union Health Minister, according to Singh, responded positively to the request. Nadda assured him that the government would work towards ramping up the health facilities at the BBMP Hospital.
