Atishi, former Chief Minister of Delhi and senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly.

The decision was made during a meeting of AAP MLAs. The party has scheduled a press conference at its headquarters in New Delhi on 23 February at 4pm, where Atishi, along with other senior leaders, will address the media.

The announcement marks a crucial shift in AAP’s strategy as it prepares to play the role of a strong opposition in the Delhi Assembly.

Atishi, a key figure in AAP’s leadership, has been known for her focus on education reforms and governance initiatives during her tenure as a minister.

Her appointment comes at a time when the party is reorganising its legislative approach following the recent Delhi Assembly election results.

AAP confirmed the decision through an official post on X, stating that Atishi, along with senior party leaders Durgesh Pathak, Mayor Mahesh Kumar Khinchi, Deputy Mayor Ravinder Bhardwaj and Leader of the House Mukesh Goel, will address the press on an important matter at the scheduled event.

Atishi’s selection as the Leader of Opposition signals AAP’s intent to maintain a strong presence in the Assembly, despite its electoral setback.

The party has reiterated its commitment to holding the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accountable for its policies and promises, particularly those made during the election campaign.

With the new Assembly session set to begin soon, Atishi is expected to take charge of legislative affairs for AAP, leading debates and questioning the government on key policy matters.

The party has also indicated that it will focus on issues such as governance, public welfare schemes and transparency in administration.

Atishi’s elevation is seen as part of AAP’s broader restructuring process. The party has been revamping its core leadership and organisational structure, aiming to strengthen its position in Delhi politics.

The upcoming press conference is expected to outline AAP’s future course of action and its approach to the new political landscape in the capital.

As the opposition leader, Atishi will be at the forefront of challenging the policies of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s government. She has previously criticised the BJP for not fulfilling key promises, including the ₹2,500 financial assistance scheme for women in Delhi.

Her leadership in the opposition is likely to bring renewed energy to AAP’s efforts to engage with the electorate and counter the BJP’s governance strategies.
