The office of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee in Amtala, South 24 Parganas, was demolished on Saturday following allegations of illegal construction. The demolition was carried out by the administration in the presence of a large police contingent, central forces and senior officials.
According to administrative sources, Banerjee allegedly failed to submit valid documents for the four-storey building despite receiving multiple notices. Officials claimed that the structure was built without an approved building plan and the necessary permissions.
The administration reportedly issued the first notice on June 30, followed by another on July 7, seeking relevant documents related to the construction. Banerjee was also instructed to appear before the district administration office on July 15 to provide the required paperwork. Officials claimed that neither the notices were responded to nor did any representative appear on the scheduled date, following which the demolition process was initiated.
Security arrangements were tightened around the site as police personnel, central forces and administrative officials remained present since morning. The area was cordoned off to prevent any law and order situation, while senior police officers supervised the operation. Fire brigade personnel were also kept on standby. Abhijit Das, the BJP candidate who contested against Banerjee in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, alleged that the building was constructed illegally. He claimed that the land was purchased in the name of “Leaps and Bounds” and that the Enforcement Directorate had attached the property.
“This is the illegal office of an illegal MP. Abhishek Banerjee won through rigged voting. A bakery was allegedly demolished overnight to make way for the four-storey office building without proper authorisation,” Das alleged, adding that the office was used as a base for unlawful activities. The administration stated that official records mention the name of Banerjee’s father, Amit Banerjee, in connection with the property.
However, officials claimed that the required approved building plans, construction permissions and other documents were not submitted. The demolition comes amid a broader drive by the state administration against alleged illegal constructions across the state. Officials described the action against Banerjee’s office as part of the ongoing enforcement campaign.
