The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, today said that the significant advancements being witnessed in the field of technology should benefit everyone in society, and there should be concern about their impact on marginalised groups.
The President, who graced the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of BIT Mesra in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on Saturday, said that while technology creates major disruptions in societies, its impact on marginalised communities must be carefully considered.
“The great opportunities being created should be available to all the great transformations being brought about should benefit all,” she said.
Addressing the students and faculty members of the premier technical institution of Eastern India, the President said, “Ours is the age of technology New advances in the field of information technology have changed the way we live What was unthinkable till yesterday has become reality today.”
She stated that the coming years would be even more transformative, with far-reaching advancements expected, particularly in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
Murmu further said, “As AI rapidly transforms economies the Government of India has been quick in responding to the emerging scenario Several initiatives are being taken to integrate AI in higher education institutions.”
The President advised the youth not to overlook the importance of small-scale traditional solutions. She emphasised that innovators and entrepreneurs must not ignore the knowledge base of traditional communities.
The President remarked that the Platinum Jubilee was an ideal occasion to celebrate and honour BIT Mesra’s contributions to education, research, and innovation in engineering, technology, and allied fields.
She expressed her delight that the institute had been a pioneer in multiple areas. The country’s first Department of Space Engineering and Rocketry was established here in 1964.
Additionally, one of India’s earliest Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Parks (STEP) to promote engineering entrepreneurship was founded here in 1975.
She expressed confidence that BIT Mesra would continue making significant contributions to the ongoing evolution of science and technology in India.
The President also visited a science exhibition organised by students and interacted with many of them. She marked the occasion by planting a sapling on the campus.
