Former BJP MP and ex-Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is poised for a return to active politics following his acquittal in the sexual harassment case filed by six women wrestlers, with the ruling BJP expected to once again tap intLok Sabha electionso his influence in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The six-time parliamentarian is set to hold a "Satyamev Jayate" rally in Gonda on August 7, a show of political strength that party insiders believe could mark the beginning of his reintegration into the BJP's electoral strategy ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.
Singh, who was denied a BJP ticket in the 2024 because of the allegations against him, has remained politically influential despite being sidelined by the party during the controversy. The BJP instead fielded his son Karan Bhushan Singh from Kaiserganj, who went on to win the seat. His elder son, Prateek Bhushan Singh, is an MLA from Gonda.
According to BJP leaders, Singh's acquittal has removed the legal hurdle that had forced the party to distance itself from him. Senior leaders say he could once again emerge as a key campaigner and play an important role in candidate selection for the 2027 Assembly polls, particularly in eastern Uttar Pradesh, where he continues to wield considerable influence.
The allegations against Singh had sparked one of India's biggest protests by sportspersons in recent years. Olympic medallists and leading wrestlers staged months-long demonstrations in Delhi in 2023, demanding his arrest and removal as WFI chief. The Delhi Police later filed a chargesheet after the Supreme Court intervened to ensure FIRs were registered.
Supporters have celebrated the acquittal with "Satya Ki Jeet Hui" posters and congratulatory events, while Singh has publicly projected the verdict as vindication. His upcoming rally is expected to draw BJP legislators and supporters from across Uttar Pradesh, underscoring his enduring organisational network.
Party sources maintain that while the final decision rests with the BJP's central leadership, Singh's political rehabilitation now appears firmly back on the agenda after years on the sidelines.
