As Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured the landslide-ravaged regions of Wayanad on Saturday, the Congress party seized the moment to urge him to extend his concern to Manipur, a state that has been embroiled in a 15-month-long crisis.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, known for his sharp commentary, welcomed the Prime Minister’s presence in Wayanad but didn’t miss the opportunity to highlight the ongoing turmoil in Manipur.

In a post on X, Ramesh acknowledged the gravity of the situation in Kerala, stating, "It is good that the non-biological PM is in Wayanad today. It was a devastating tragedy."

However, his message carried a deeper undertone, as he pointedly remarked, "Hopefully, he (Modi) will find the time and the inclination before then to also visit Manipur which has been experiencing so much pain, anguish, and agony for over 15 months now."

The Congress leader's remarks were a clear jab at the Prime Minister's continued absence from the conflict-stricken northeastern state.

Ramesh also sarcastically mentioned Modi’s upcoming visit to Ukraine, implying that the PM should prioritise addressing domestic crises before engaging in international diplomacy.

The crisis in Manipur, which erupted on May 3 last year due to long-standing tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has claimed at least 226 lives, displaced over 60,000 people, and left the state in a state of unrest.

The Congress has repeatedly criticised Modi for not addressing the violence, despite mounting casualties and the dire humanitarian situation.

Meanwhile, Modi's aerial survey of Wayanad highlighted the ongoing relief efforts in the region, where over 200 people have lost their lives due to devastating landslides.

The Congress hopes that similar attention will soon be directed towards Manipur.
