An Air India aircraft and an IndiGo plane came face to face on a taxiway at Ahmedabad airport on Wednesday evening after the Air India flight reportedly took a wrong turn while taxiing after landing. No passengers or crew were injured and both aircraft remained at a safe distance from each other.

The incident occurred around 8 pm when Air India flight AI2493, operating from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, landed at the airport and was instructed to taxi to Stand 34L via taxiways C and G. According to sources, the aircraft inadvertently deviated from the assigned route and took a wrong turn, bringing it face to face with an IndiGo aircraft preparing to depart for Mumbai.

Despite the unexpected encounter, there was considerable distance between the two aircraft and no immediate risk of collision, sources said. Air traffic authorities instructed the IndiGo aircraft to give way while the situation was being managed.

In a statement, Air India acknowledged the incident and said the aircraft had mistakenly taken an incorrect turn during taxiing.

“We are aware of an incident where our flight AI2493 operating from Mumbai to Ahmedabad on 24 June after landing inadvertently took a wrong turn during taxiing. There was no compromise on the safety of passengers and crew.”

The airline said the aircraft was subsequently towed back to the parking bay and an investigation had been launched to determine the circumstances that led to the error.

IndiGo also confirmed the incident, saying its Ahmedabad-Mumbai flight 6E 5160 experienced a brief delay during taxiing because another airline's aircraft had entered its path.

“IndiGo flight 6E 5160, scheduled to operate from Ahmedabad to Mumbai on 24 June 2026, was briefly delayed while taxiing out for departure after an aircraft of another airline inadvertently took an incorrect turn and came in the way of our aircraft. Both aircraft came to a halt at a safe distance from each other.”

The airline added that the other aircraft was later towed away and the flight subsequently departed and landed safely at Mumbai's airport.

“The other aircraft was subsequently towed away and our flight departed and landed safely at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai. In line with established protocols, the relevant authorities were immediately informed. As always, the safety and security of our customers, crew, and aircraft remain our topmost priorities.”

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of aviation safety procedures and taxiway operations, though both airlines stressed that standard safety protocols functioned as intended and there was no danger to passengers.
