A controversy has erupted ahead of the Ghatshila Assembly by-election after an alleged AI-generated image of BJP candidate Babulal Soren went viral on social media.
The image, widely circulated across several platforms, has drawn sharp reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which termed it a deliberate attempt to malign Soren’s reputation and mislead voters.
BJP spokesperson Ajay Shah alleged that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) was behind the circulation of the fake content.
“After realising their imminent defeat, JMM has stooped to the lowest level of politics,” he said, accusing the party’s IT cell and fake social media handles of running a smear campaign against the BJP nominee.
Shah further claimed that the ruling party had failed to showcase its performance over the past six years and was now relying on “AI-generated lies” to divert public attention.
“Unable to contest on real issues, JMM is trying to mislead the people through false propaganda,” he remarked.
The BJP has urged the Election Commission and the state police to identify and penalise those responsible for creating and circulating the image. The party has also demanded the removal of all defamatory posts related to the incident from social media platforms.

Following a complaint lodged by Kiran Soren, Magistrate of the Flying Squad Team, and a junior engineer from the Galudih Irrigation Division, an FIR has been registered at Ghatshila police station against unidentified persons.
The case has been filed under Section 66C of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, Sections 300, 223, and 356(2) of the IPC, and relevant provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
Police officials said a probe is underway to trace the origin of the fake post on Facebook, adding that strict action will be taken against those involved in its creation or circulation.
This is the first FIR related to an AI-generated fake post since the Election Commission recently instructed districts to act swiftly against the spread of such misleading digital content during elections.
