AIADMK-BJP Reunion? EPS Defers Decision Until Polls.

The recent meeting between AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stirred speculation about a potential alliance between the AIADMK and the BJP for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in 2026.

However, Palaniswami, who is widely known as EPS, dismissed rumours about any immediate political partnership, asserting that alliances are formed closer to the elections.

After the meeting, Palaniswami clarified that the discussion focused on issues concerning the welfare of Tamil Nadu.

He reportedly discussed the Enforcement Directorate's probe into the alleged ₹1,000 crore scam involving the state-run liquor corporation, TASMAC, and requested a thorough investigation.

Palaniswami also raised concerns regarding the delayed release of central funds under schemes like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and initiatives related to education.

Addressing the media, Palaniswami said there was no discussion about an alliance for the 2026 Assembly elections, emphasising that the AIADMK's priority is addressing the state's pressing issues.

He criticised the media for creating speculation about alliances for the sake of sensationalism. According to EPS, alliances are typically formed based on circumstances and only after the election dates are officially announced.

Palaniswami also highlighted several issues concerning Tamil Nadu, including the state's adherence to the two-language policy, which he insisted should be continued. Additionally, he urged that the proposed delimitation of parliamentary constituencies should not adversely impact the state.

He also requested expedited action on the Godavari-Cauvery river linking project and funding for the Nadanthai Vazhi Cauvery scheme. EPS further stressed that the Centre should adhere to the Supreme Court’s directive regarding the Mekedatu dam project and prevent its construction.

The AIADMK had previously formed an alliance with the BJP following the demise of J. Jayalalithaa in 2016. However, despite contesting together in the 2021 state elections, the AIADMK ended its partnership with the BJP in 2023.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) had managed to secure significant victories in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, as well as the 2021 Assembly elections.
