The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has introduced new guidelines to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, with the aim of bridging the gap between theoretical learning and practical application.
AICTE Chairman Prof. TG Sitharam unveiled these guidelines, which include the appointment of Professors of Practice (PoP) and initiatives to enhance industry-academia mobility.
According to the guidelines, Professors of Practice will play a crucial role in enriching academic environments with real-world insights. The appointment of Women Professors of Practice under the BHARATI initiative aims to promote gender diversity and inclusivity in higher education. Additionally, AICTE plans to introduce initiatives to fund Professors of Practice, particularly focusing on supporting women PoP.
AICTE Vice Chairman Dr. Abhay Jere highlighted the importance of introducing Associate and Assistant Professors of Practice roles to facilitate the appointment of experienced professionals who may not meet the traditional 15 years of experience requirement for PoP roles. These initiatives aim to ensure a broader range of industry experts can contribute to academia.
The comprehensive guidelines were prepared by a committee chaired by Prof. G.D. Yadav and the Policy and Academic Planning Bureau of AICTE. These guidelines aim to balance the inclusion of industry expertise with the academic rigour required for institutions.
The appointment of Professors of Practice is essential for bridging the gap between theory and practice in higher education. They align academic curricula with industry needs, enhancing student employability by providing practical insights into current industry practices, trends, and challenges. Professors of Practice also bring valuable industry connections, offering students internship opportunities, mentorship, and job placements.
The mobility of professionals between academia and industry is crucial for creating a dynamic educational environment. This bi-directional flow facilitates knowledge transfer, with industry professionals bringing practical insights to academia, and academics applying their research to real-world problems.
These initiatives by AICTE aim to foster seamless collaboration between academia and industry, ensuring the relevance and effectiveness of technical education in India.
