Health Workers Resume Duties After SC Intervenes in Strike.

Health professionals at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, have called off their 11-day strike following an appeal by the Supreme Court. The strike, which had disrupted medical services, ended on Thursday as the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) announced their decision in a statement.

The RDA's decision to end the strike came after the Supreme Court's intervention. In their statement, the RDA expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for addressing the broader issue of safety and security for healthcare workers, particularly in light of the recent incident at RG Kar Medical College.

The Supreme Court had urged the health professionals to resume their duties, emphasising the critical role they play in the public health infrastructure. The court also assured that no adverse action would be taken against them once they returned to work.

This development coincided with the court's ongoing hearing into the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud shared a personal experience to highlight the challenges faced by patients and medical staff in public hospitals.

In response to the situation, the Supreme Court has established a 10-member National Task Force to recommend measures for preventing violence against medical professionals and ensuring their safety. The task force, led by Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, is expected to provide an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months.

The court also directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a status report on the ongoing investigation into the rape case and requested the West Bengal government to report on the mob attack at RG Kar Hospital on August 15.
