AIMIM candidate Tahir Hussain, who is contesting from the Mustafabad Assembly seat in Delhi, has accused both the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party of trying to obstruct his election campaign.
Hussain, who was granted custody parole by the Supreme Court to campaign, said he is not getting the full 12 hours as directed by the court.
Hussain claimed that due to travel time between the jail and his constituency, he is left with less than eight hours to connect with voters. He raised concerns with the police administration, urging them to ensure he gets the full time allotted for campaigning.
The Supreme Court had granted him custody parole for campaigning in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. However, he alleged that he was being taken back to jail earlier than scheduled, reducing his time on the ground.
He expressed hope that the authorities would allow him to campaign for the full 12 hours on the remaining days.
Hussain further accused both the BJP and his former party, AAP, of working against his electoral prospects in Mustafabad. He alleged that his main opponent from the BJP was attempting to prevent him from reaching out to voters. He also claimed that AAP was making efforts to hinder his campaign.
The Supreme Court had on January 28 permitted Hussain, a former AAP councillor, to campaign while in custody. The court ordered that he be released from jail as per jail manual timings upon depositing Rs 2 lakh per day for 12 hours of parole.
Hussain is an accused in multiple cases related to the 2020 Delhi riots. He was booked in the murder case of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma, who was killed during the riots in North-East Delhi.
The violence, which erupted on February 24, 2020, resulted in 53 deaths and left many injured. Several FIRs were filed against him in connection with the riots.
In the Mustafabad Assembly constituency, Hussain is contesting against BJP's Mohan Singh Bisht, AAP’s Adil Ahmad Khan, and Congress candidate Ali Mehdi, who is the son of former MLA Hasan Mehdi.
