The All India Muslim Personal Board (AIMPB) has voiced strong opposition to the proposed amendments to the Waqf Bill, citing that the changes could weaken the legislation’s effectiveness.
The AIMPB announced on Saturday that within just 13 days, over 3.66 crore Muslims had registered their disapproval of the bill via email, underscoring the widespread concern within the community.
AIMPB General Secretary Maulana Mohammed Fazalur Rahim Mujaddidi stated that if the amendments lack the support of the Muslim community, they should be reconsidered or discarded.
Mujaddidi emphasised that amendments to the Waqf Bill in the past were aimed at strengthening the Waqf Board, but the current proposal would have the opposite effect.
He stated that AIMPB is considering legal options to address the matter and has urged lawmakers to respect the views of the Muslim community.
Additionally, the 29th AIMPB conference is set to take place in Bengaluru on November 23-24, where various issues, including the Waqf Board Amendment Bill, will be discussed in detail.
In a parallel development, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed state officials to retract notices issued to farmers over Waqf land disputes.
During a high-level meeting with officials from the Revenue Department, Minority Welfare Department, and the Waqf Board, the Chief Minister stressed that farmers should not face difficulties over Waqf land issues. He also instructed that unauthorised changes to land records, known as pahani, be nullified if they were made without proper notice or legal procedure.
This decision comes amid rising tensions, as the Karnataka BJP has scheduled a state-wide protest on November 4. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has called for the removal of Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan and the cessation of the ongoing Waqf Adalats.
The protest reflects concerns among BJP leaders and their supporters regarding recent developments related to Waqf land management and proposed amendments.
