Air India Flight AI191, which left Mumbai for Newark on Wednesday, was forced to make a precautionary return to Mumbai after a suspected technical issue was reported. An airline spokesperson said the aircraft, which had taken off from Mumbai in the morning, was subjected to "air return", and it landed safely back at its origin.
The airline issued a statement explaining the incident: "The crew of flight AI191, operating from Mumbai to Newark on October 22, made a precautionary air return to Mumbai due to a suspected technical issue." Following its safe landing, the aircraft was immediately taken out of service to undergo thorough inspections to identify and address the potential problem.
As a result of the incident, both Flight AI191 (Mumbai to Newark) and its return leg, Flight AI144 (Newark to Mumbai), were cancelled. This disruption affected passengers at both ends of the route. Air India promptly took steps to mitigate the inconvenience caused to travellers.
In Mumbai, affected passengers were provided with hotel accommodations and rebooked on alternative flights operated by Air India or other partner airlines to ensure they could reach their destinations as soon as possible. Similarly, passengers in Newark awaiting Flight AI144 were informed of the cancellation and offered assistance with alternative travel arrangements.

The passengers of AI144 from Newark were also notified of the cancellation and are being assisted with alternative arrangements at the earliest opportunity."

The airline has not yet provided additional details regarding the nature of the technical issue or the expected timeline for the aircraft’s return to service, pending the outcome of the ongoing inspections.
