A key leader of the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has ruled out the possibility of a reunion with the Sharad Pawar faction. The Ajit Pawar camp has reaffirmed its decision to align with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre and the MahaYuti coalition in Maharashtra.
Speaking to reporters, Maharashtra NCP chief Sunil Tatkare clarified the party’s stance. He stated that the NCP, under Ajit Pawar’s leadership, has achieved significant success in Maharashtra and remains committed to its current alliances.
Tatkare emphasised that the decision taken in July 2023 to join forces with the NDA and MahaYuti is final, leaving no room for reconsideration.
When asked about the possibility of reuniting with the Sharad Pawar faction if there were a change in their political stance, Tatkare dismissed such speculation. He remarked that politics does not operate on “ifs and buts” and reiterated the separation of familial and political matters.
The remarks come amid calls for reconciliation within the Pawar family. Ajit Pawar’s mother, Ashatai Pawar, expressed her wish for an end to the differences within the family.
During her visit to the temple town of Pandharpur, she shared her hope that divine intervention would help heal the rift. “I pray that Pandurang answers my prayers and reunites the family,” she said.
The reunion debate was reignited following a recent gesture of goodwill. On December 12, Ajit Pawar, accompanied by his family and senior party leaders, visited Sharad Pawar’s residence to extend birthday wishes to his uncle.
Despite this symbolic interaction, political differences remain firmly entrenched.
NCP working president Praful Patel also weighed in, expressing deep respect for Sharad Pawar. He described him as a guiding figure and expressed happiness at the idea of the Pawar family reconciling.
Patel emphasised the emotional significance of unity within the family, which he regards as his own.
The NCP has been split into two distinct factions since Ajit Pawar formed a separate camp in July. Sharad Pawar, a veteran leader and former Union Minister, continues to lead the NCP-SP group, which remains at odds with Ajit Pawar’s political alignment.
