Akhilesh Yadav backs Waqf after Supreme Court order.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said the government should not interfere in Waqf matters, shortly after the Supreme Court declined to stay the entire Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 but kept certain provisions on hold.

Speaking at a press conference, Yadav said he hoped the court would ensure full justice. “Our opinion was that the government should not interfere in Waqf. We hope the Supreme Court will do further justice,” he said.

Earlier in the day, a bench of Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih observed that some sections of the amended Act require protection and refused to halt the law in its entirety while considering petitions challenging its constitutional validity.

Yadav also reached out to the Vishwakarma community, pledging his party’s support and promising to dedicate a site to Lord Vishwakarma along the riverfront. “We assure the people belonging to the Vishwakarma community that we will stand by them. We will dedicate a place to Lord Vishwakarma on the riverfront... I am certain that we all will support each other in the 2027 elections to make a Samajwadi Party government for social justice,” he said.

He criticised the state of cleanliness and urban development in Uttar Pradesh, alleging that cities were being falsely projected as clean while waste accumulated on the streets.

He further questioned why crucial issues such as artificial intelligence, power plants, expressways, river cleaning, and smart city plans were being ignored.

“As far as a sadhu we are talking about, he wants that no one should debate on AI, no one should debate on power plants, expressways, how our rivers should be cleaned, the dream of a smart city was shown, but there are heaps of garbage in the city... This is the state,” Yadav said.

He added, “I don’t know which organisation comes to spread lies in the cities that the three cities of UP are top three in cleanliness, such organisations should be blacklisted... I don’t know what the matter is that changes are not coming to Gorakhpur, we are waiting for when the boat will run there.”

The SP chief further attacked the ruling BJP on issues of inflation, unemployment, and law and order. “Inflation will be controlled only when the BJP steps aside. Employment will be available only when the BJP goes. Law and order will be implemented only when the BJP leave,” Yadav said.

On the SIR matter, he expressed hope that the Supreme Court would direct the Election Commission to rectify the voter list. “We hope that the Supreme Court will get the voter list corrected from the Election Commission,” he said.
