Actor Akshay Kumar recently reacted to veteran actress and MP Jaya Bachchan’s critical remarks about the title of his 2017 film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. The comments came during a press meet for his upcoming film Kesari: Chapter 2, held in Mumbai.
When a journalist brought up Jaya Bachchan’s disapproval of the film’s name, Akshay responded with calm humility. “If she has said so, she is right,” he remarked.
“If I had made a mistake by making such a film, she might be right.” His measured response reflected his willingness to accept differing opinions, even on a subject as personal as a film he was deeply associated with.
Jaya Bachchan had shared her views during the India TV Conclave, where she openly questioned the title of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and even labelled the film as a “flop.”
“Just look at the title of the film. I would never go to watch a film with such a name. Yeh koi naam hai?” she asked, suggesting that a film with such a title lacked appeal.
Turning to the audience, she polled them about their interest in the film. When only a few hands went up, she jokingly said, “Among so many people, hardly four people want to watch the film. It’s very sad. Yeh toh flop hai.”
Released in 2017, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha featured Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles and carried a strong social message. The film followed the story of Keshav, a small-town man, whose new wife Jaya leaves him because their home lacks a toilet.
Determined to win her back, Keshav sets out to challenge deep-rooted social norms and fight for basic sanitation. The film was both a commercial success and praised for shedding light on the issue of open defecation in India.
Alongside Akshay and Bhumi, the film also starred Anupam Kher, Divyenndu, Sudhir Pandey and Ayesha Raza Mishra in key roles.
Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar is now promoting his next major release, Kesari: Chapter 2, which is based on Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat’s book The Case That Shook the Empire.
The film revolves around the aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the legal battle for justice led by C. Sankaran Nair, a prominent lawyer and former President of the Indian National Congress.
Kesari: Chapter 2 is set to release in cinemas on April 18, and aims to bring to light a lesser-known chapter in India's freedom struggle.
