Police have arrested and sent to jail all eight accused involved in the alleged gang-rape case of a Spanish woman tourist in Dumka district on Jharkhand.

The administration also transferred an amount of Rs 10 lakh converted in Euros to the victim’s account as compensation on Tuesday.

The tourist and her husband left for Nepal Bihar escorted by police to continue their journey on Tuesday.

The Spanish woman has said in her police complaint that she was raped by seven men, who were slightly drunk on the night of March 01 near Kurmahar, under Hansdiha Police Station in Dumka district of Jharkhand.

“I and my husband, 63, set out on a world tour a few months ago on two separate motorcycles. In mid-July 2023, we entered India from Pakistan via Amritsar and visited Northern India including Jammu and Kashmir and many states of Southern India. About two weeks ago, we entered India through West Bengal and spent three days in Kolkata,” she said in her complaint.

“On March 1, 2024, around 8 am we left Kolkata for Nepal via Jharkhand and Bihar state. In the course of our journey, we reached Kumrahat village in Dumka district under Hansdiha Police Station. As it was quite late, we decided to establish our temporary makeshift tent at night for our overnight stay in a nearby forested hill road near Kojji settlement about 1 kilometre NE from the main road,” she said.

“Around 7 pm in the evening, while we were inside our tent, we heard some suspicious voices. As soon as we came out from the tent we saw two people talking on the phone. Around 7.30 pm few people came on two motorcycles. They stopped at the tent and murmured, ‘Hello friends’. We came out of our tent by lighting our head torch and saw five people rushing towards our tent and two more people moving towards our tent. They were talking in the local language and were also using a few English words in between,” she further added.

“Three of them started quarrelling with my husband, then assaulted him and tied both his hands. The remaining four forcefully picked me up after showing me a dagger. They threw me on the ground, kicked me, punched me and raped me repeatedly. The three people who tied my husband also came and raped me one by one. All seven people raped me repeatedly and physically assaulted me,” said the victim.

The tourist said that a Swiss knife, wristwatch, a platinum ring with diamond, a silver ring, a set of black earpods, one black purse, one credit card, around Rs 11,000, 300 US dollars, few coins of Bangladesh and one steel spoon and fork with cover were snatched from them.

The woman in her FIR stated that among all seven people, one of them was 28-30 years old wearing a white scarf and white T-shirt, while the rest of them were young adults. All of them seemed to be slightly drunk.

She said that the incident took (place) from around 7-30 pm to 10 pm in the night. “After raping me and physically assaulting us, they ran away towards the village. After the incident, we took our motorcycles and somehow came to the main road. At around 11 pm , the night patrolling party of Hansdiha police immediately took us to the nearby community health centre , Sariyahaat Dumka, for our primary medical treatment. I am sure that we can identify all the culprits by seeing their faces again,” she said.
