Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court, has been at the center of controversy after his remarks at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event. He is expected to explain his comments to the Supreme Court collegium, reported.

The Supreme Court has taken notice of media reports about Justice Yadav’s speech. They have requested details from the Allahabad High Court, and the matter is under review, according to an official statement.

As per usual procedure, when a judge faces controversy, they are given a chance to present their side before the Supreme Court collegium, which is led by the Chief Justice of India (CJI).

What did Justice Yadav say? On December 8, at a VHP event, Justice Yadav reportedly stated that the main purpose of the Uniform Civil Code was to “promote social harmony, gender equality, and secularism.”

However, videos also showed him making statements on more provocative topics. One of his remarks about the law working "according to the majority" was widely shared on social media.

He allegedly said, “This is Hindustan, and this country will function according to the wishes of the majority.”

Several opposition leaders criticised his comments, calling them “hate speech.” On Friday, more than 55 Rajya Sabha MPs filed a notice to begin impeachment proceedings against Justice Yadav.

Senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan also wrote to the Chief Justice of India, urging an “in-house inquiry” into Justice Yadav’s conduct. Bhushan emphasised that a strong response is needed to restore public confidence in the judiciary and called for an immediate inquiry into the judge’s actions, along with the suspension of his judicial duties.
