Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated International Yoga Day celebrations on Saturday by attending yoga activities at various places in the state.

Shah did yoga with the citizens at Prahladnagar Garden in Ahmedabad, whereas Chief Minister Patel attended the state-level event in Vadnagar, Mehsana district — the birthplace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi — as per an official release.

The event at Vadnagar saw a historic milestone when over 2,000 volunteers set a world record by together doing 'Bhujangasana', or the cobra pose, a lying backbend posture that increases spinal flexibility and lung capacity.

"It's a moment of pride for Gujarat and India. I am pleased to tell you that 2,121 individuals did 'Bhujangasana' together at the scenic Sharmistha Lake in Vadnagar and set a Guinness World Record," Patel tweeted on social media site X.

"Huge congratulations to the people of Gujarat for achieving this world record. The ancient town of Vadnagar — a nexus of spirituality, art, and culture, and birthplace of PM Narendra Modi — saw a scene both peaceful and grand, as yoga filled the air with ethereal beauty," the chief minister further said.

A Guinness World Record representative gave a certificate to Patel, saying: "The most individuals to do the cobra pose (yoga) at one time was achieved by the Gujarat State Yog Board for International Yoga Day in Vadnagar, Gujarat on June 21, 2025."

Speadling words to the assemblage before the commencement of yoga, Patel thanked Prime Minister Modi for the international acceptance of yoga, and said his labor had made the United Nations announce June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014.

"Due to the PM's efforts, the traditional health legacy of Yoga and Pranayama have now become an integral part of people's daily life across the globe," the chief minister added.

He also pointed out the influence of Modi's recent call to combat obesity, saying that Gujarat has decided to be an obesity-free and healthy state.

Approximately 1.5 crore individuals all over Gujarat were reported to have participated in the Yoga Day celebrations this year, which is another record of mass public engagement in the promotion of holistic well-being and health.
