Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Wednesday congratulated India’s dairy giant Amul and the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) for achieving a historic milestone by securing the top two positions among the world’s leading cooperatives.
In a post on X, Shah described the achievement as “a proud moment for Bharat” and praised the remarkable contribution of millions of farmers and women associated with these organisations.
“Heartiest congratulations to Amul and IFFCO for occupying the first two ranks among the top ten cooperatives in the world,” he wrote.
“It is an honour to the tireless dedication of millions of women associated with Amul and farmers contributing to the IFFCO. It is also a testament to the boundless potential of the cooperatives, which is being transformed into a global model of empowerment and self-reliance by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Shah added.
The recognition highlights the growing strength of India’s cooperative movement on the global stage. Amul and IFFCO have consistently been symbols of collective success, driving socio-economic transformation through member-based participation and decentralised management.
Their recognition among the world’s top cooperatives underscores India’s ability to combine traditional cooperation with modern enterprise.
India’s dairy sector, of which Amul forms the backbone, continues to play a crucial role in rural livelihoods and inclusive growth. The country remains the largest milk producer in the world, blending farmer-led cooperatives, women’s empowerment and scientific innovation to sustain its global leadership.
The government has continued to extend support to the dairy and cooperative sectors through subsidies, credit schemes, and investments in research, fodder, and animal health to ensure their long-term sustainability and competitiveness.

In addition to these achievements, the National Co-operative Exports Limited (NCEL), established by the Government of India in 2023, has also reached an important milestone by exporting goods worth Rs 5,403.01 crore.
Its exports include a wide range of agricultural and processed food products such as rice, sugar, onions, baby food, spices and tea.
NCEL has been promoted by five of India’s leading cooperatives: the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-operative Limited (IFFCO), Krishak Bharati Co-operative Limited (KRIBHCO), National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED), Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF–Amul), and the National Co-operative Development Corporation (NCDC).
This latest recognition of Amul and IFFCO represents a moment of pride for India’s cooperative movement, which has evolved from a grassroots initiative into a globally acknowledged model of community-driven economic growth and self-reliance.
