Amit Shah Vows Assistance For Mizoram’s Cyclone Recovery.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has committed to providing financial assistance to Mizoram for humanitarian aid and cyclone rehabilitation, as announced in an official statement on July 11. Shah spoke with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma over the phone, ensuring that funds for refugee assistance would soon be released.

The statement, however, did not clarify whether the aid would go to refugees from Myanmar, Bangladesh, or the over 8,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Manipur who sought refuge in Mizoram due to ethnic violence. The Mizoram government had previously requested Rs 10 crore for the relief and rehabilitation of Manipur IDPs last May, but no funds had been provided by the Centre.

Amit Shah also pledged a rehabilitation package to address the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Remal and the heavy monsoon rains. Cyclone Remal, which struck on May 27 and 28, resulted in 34 fatalities, the destruction of numerous homes, and massive evacuations, wreaking havoc across the state. The state’s Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department has requested Rs 237.6 crore from the central government to aid in recovery efforts following the cyclone.

This announcement brings a glimmer of hope to Mizoram, which has been grappling with the dual challenges of accommodating refugees and recovering from natural disasters. The aid is expected to provide much-needed relief to those affected and help rebuild the state's infrastructure.

The promise of aid comes at a crucial time, as Mizoram continues to deal with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal and the ongoing monsoon season. The funds will be instrumental in addressing the immediate needs of those displaced by the cyclone and the monsoon floods. Additionally, the aid for refugees will help provide necessary resources for their sustenance and well-being.

In his conversation with Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Amit Shah emphasised the central government’s commitment to supporting Mizoram in these challenging times. The financial aid is expected to be disbursed soon, providing a boost to the state’s relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The assurance of aid for both the cyclone-affected areas and the refugees underscores the government's recognition of the severity of the situation in Mizoram. The funds will play a vital role in facilitating the recovery process and supporting the displaced populations.

As Mizoram awaits the release of these funds, the state government remains hopeful that the central government’s support will help mitigate the impact of the disasters and provide a path towards recovery and stability.

The pledged aid highlights the collaborative effort between the state and central governments in addressing the challenges faced by Mizoram, ensuring that the affected communities receive the necessary assistance to rebuild their lives.
