Army chief General Dhiraj Seth will be visiting Jammu on August 11 for fresh assessment of situation in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Western Command. This will be his third visit to the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in about a month.
As per the sources, General Seth will visit forward areas in Jammu sector including Domana, Akhnoor and adjacent areas during his one-day visit to the region. He will be accompanied by the Western Army Commander and Yol Cantonment-based 9 Corps chief besides other top Army officers.
After taking over as the new Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) on June 30 from Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Gen Seth undertook three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir from July 7-9 when he toured Srinagar and areas falling under 15 Corps in Kashmir, Northern Command headquartered at Udhampur, 16 Corps at Nagrota and forward areas of Rajouri, Poonch and Sunderbani along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan.
On July 25 and 26, the Army chief visited Kargil on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the functions at Kargil. However, the areas earlier visited by Gen Seth in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh fall under the Northern Command. Three districts of Jammu region including Jammu, Samba and Kathua, however, are under the control of Chandimandir (Chandigarh)-based Western Command.
Although the Border Security Force (BSF) is the frontline force along the International Border (IB) areas in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts, the Army plays major role as the LoC starts in Akhnoor sector. The Army chief will review the situation in forward areas of Jammu with top Army officials during his one-day visit to the region. He is also expected to tour forward areas and interact with the Field Commanders. He will return to New Delhi the same evening.
