Marking five years since the abrogation of Article 370, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday, praised the move as a transformative decision that has ushered in a new era of empowerment for marginalised sections and strengthened grassroots democracy in Jammu and Kashmir.
Writing on X, the union minister stated, "Today marks five years since the historic abrogation of Article 370 and 35A under PM Narendra Modi Ji's leadership. This transformative decision has ushered in a new era of empowerment for marginalised sections and strengthened grassroots democracy in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh".
Article 370, along with Article 35A, was abrogated on August 5, 2019, and the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Article 35A, conceived in 1954, had empowered the Jammu and Kashmir legislature to define the state's 'permanent residents' and their special rights and privileges.
Shah credited the region's youth with driving socio-economic growth and cultural revival, hailing the Narendra Modi government's efforts to foster peace and comprehensive development as a grand success.
The home minister, who tabled the bill in Parliament on August 5, 2019, thanked Prime Minister Modi for the landmark decision and reaffirmed his dedication to advancing the region's aspirations and transformative progress.
Shah's comments come as the region marks five years since the historic decision, which he described as a milestone in the region's journey towards empowerment and comprehensive development.
