Thongdok described the Shanghai incident as a direct insult to India's sovereignty.

Pema Wang Thongdok, the woman from Arunachal Pradesh who was allegedly harassed and detained by Chinese officials at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, has strongly responded to online trolls while expressing gratitude to those who supported her.

In a post on X, she underlined that any diplomatic action taken by the Government of India would be for the benefit and pride of all Indians, particularly those living in India and Arunachal Pradesh, and not for her personal gain.

The incident occurred on November 21 when Thongdok was travelling from London to Japan with a three-hour layover in Shanghai. According to her account, Chinese immigration officials detained her for 18 hours and refused to recognise her Indian passport, asserting that her birthplace, Arunachal Pradesh, was “part of China”.

In a post shared last night, Thongdok thanked supporters and directly addressed those who trolled her over the episode: “I would like to thank everyone speaking in support of this diplomatic issue, and while I’m new here and not active on X, it’s because I have a very high-profile full-time position working in the financial services and don’t have idle time to answer trollers,” she wrote.

She further clarified that the people who truly understand the gravity of the situation are the ones whose opinions matter to her, adding that she has no intention of engaging with those who fail to grasp it.

Reaffirming solidarity, Thongdok stressed the importance of Indians standing together as one nation: “I don’t even live in India, so any action that the Indian govt takes will be for the benefit & pride of my fellow Indians and Arunachalis living here, not mine. We are one nation; we stand for one another,” she wrote.

Her message has resonated widely, reinforcing a sense of unity and collective pride among Indians in the face of the diplomatic slight.
