A week-long programme celebrating Assam's linguistic diversity was launched on Sunday, marking a month since Assamese was accorded Classical language status.
Events under the 'Bhasha Gaurav Saptah' are being organised statewide to honour the contributions made to the Assamese language.
The Union Cabinet had approved the Classical language status for Assamese, alongside Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, and Bengali, on October 3.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the celebration on social media, stating, “#BhashaGauravSaptah, a week-long celebration of Assam's rich linguistic heritage and the conferring of Classical Language status to Assamese, begins today.”
He added that people from various linguistic groups will celebrate their languages and pledge to preserve them throughout the week.
Sarma had previously indicated that universities, schools, and civil society organisations will host events honouring Assamese writers and scholars, whose contributions have shaped the language since the 4th century AD.
During this period, the people of Assam will also express their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Cabinet's gesture towards the Assamese language.
On October 8, the state cabinet adopted a resolution thanking Modi for granting Classical language status to Assamese.
The Chief Minister mentioned that a summary of the Assamese language's history, along with the government's efforts in achieving this recognition, would be published during the celebrations.
All events will be conducted in Assamese or any of the 14 languages recognised as official languages or mediums of instruction in the state.
However, in districts where the Model Code of Conduct is in force due to upcoming bypolls, government programmes will not be held, though other organisations may still conduct events.
