The Assam Police have arrested All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) legislator Aminul Islam for making what they described as “derogatory” and “instigating” remarks in connection with the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Islam, who represents the Dhing constituency, was taken into custody and brought to the Nagaon police station, according to Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh.
In a post on social media platform ‘X’, the Assam Police stated that the arrest followed a viral video clip in which the MLA allegedly made misleading comments during a public gathering. The speech was said to have the potential to incite unrest and create an adverse situation.
A case (No. 347/25) was registered against him at the Nagaon Police Station under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita (BNS), including sections 152, 196, 197(1), 113(3), 352, and 353.
Responding to the development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a strong statement on ‘X’, condemning any attempt to justify or downplay the recent terror attack.
“Assam will take the strongest possible action against anyone who dares to defend—directly or indirectly—the horrific, Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam,” Sarma said.
He added that efforts to normalise or justify the killing of innocent civilians would not be seen as expressions of free speech but as acts against the very soul of India.
The arrest comes in the wake of a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. The incident has triggered nationwide condemnation and prompted strong diplomatic and internal security responses.
In a significant move, the Government of India has announced the immediate suspension of visa services for Pakistani nationals.
A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that all existing Indian visas held by Pakistani citizens stand revoked from 27 April 2025. However, medical visas will remain valid only until 29 April 2025.
The Union Government has also scheduled an all-party meeting to deliberate on the situation arising from the Pahalgam attack. The meeting is set to take place at 6 pm on Thursday at Parliament and will be chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Shiv Sena (led by Eknath Shinde) has confirmed that MP Shrikant Shinde will represent the party and expressed its “unwavering” support for the government’s stance.
