The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a commanding lead in the Delhi Assembly elections, crossing the majority mark with 48 seats. In contrast, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fallen behind, managing to win only 22 seats.
The results have been a significant setback for AAP, with several key leaders losing their strongholds. However, amid the party’s poor performance, one leader has emerged as a bright spot.
Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi and the face of AAP, suffered a major defeat in the New Delhi constituency. He lost to BJP’s Parvesh Verma, who had previously served as an MP.
The loss is seen as a major blow to Kejriwal’s leadership, especially since he had been a dominant figure in Delhi’s political landscape for over a decade. The Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit also failed to make a mark in the constituency, finishing in third place.
Another key loss for AAP came in the Jangpura constituency, where former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia was defeated by BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah. Sisodia, who had played a crucial role in AAP’s governance, lost by a narrow margin.
Acknowledging his defeat, he extended his congratulations to the winning candidate and expressed his hopes that Jangpura would continue to receive good governance.
The Greater Kailash constituency also witnessed a tough battle, with AAP’s Saurabh Bhardwaj losing to BJP’s Shikha Rai. Bhardwaj, who was a minister in the Delhi government, was unable to retain his seat despite a strong campaign. His defeat further added to the list of AAP’s setbacks in this election.
Despite these losses, AAP found some solace in Kalkaji, where Atishi managed to secure a victory. In a challenging electoral environment, she stood firm against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress’s Alka Lamba.
Her win in Kalkaji is seen as a significant achievement for AAP, as most of its senior leaders failed to hold onto their seats.
Atishi had previously won the Kalkaji seat in 2020 and has been an important figure in Delhi’s education and governance reforms. Her re-election offers AAP a ray of hope, even as the party faces challenges in the aftermath of the election results.
