Delhi Government Plans And Vows Reforms After Student Deaths.

Delhi Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi Marlena, alongside Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi, met with students protesting over the tragic deaths of three UPSC aspirants. The incident occurred on July 27, due to flooding in the basement of a coaching institute at Old Rajinder Nagar in Delhi.

Atishi addressed the students' concerns, stating that they were called by the UPSC aspirants to discuss the laws the Delhi government plans to introduce. She emphasised that their visit was to understand the students' demands and ensure their voices are heard.

Atishi later took to social media platform X, promising strict actions against those responsible for the incident. She announced several measures the Delhi government would implement to support the students and improve the conditions of coaching institutes.

These measures include the introduction of a Coaching Institute Regulation Act, which aims to regulate coaching fees and address issues related to rent, brokerage, facilities, and student safety.

She also promised that ten student representatives would be involved in the law drafting process to ensure their concerns are adequately addressed. Additionally, until the new law is enacted, a Grievance Redressal Office will be set up in the office of the local MLA, Drugesh Pathak. The government also plans to build government libraries and reading rooms in major coaching hubs using the Mayor’s fund.

Earlier, Atishi met with a student delegation from various coaching centres across Delhi, including Rajinder Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, and Nehru Vihar. This meeting was attended by senior officials from the Delhi government, the education department, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the law department, and the fire department. The purpose was to listen to the students' concerns and gather feedback on the proposed regulations.

During the meeting, students raised multiple issues, including the infrastructure of coaching institutes, the high fees, and the lack of study spaces after the closure of libraries in the basements of coaching institutes. Atishi assured the students that the government would find solutions to both their short-term and long-term problems.

The meeting highlighted the students' struggle for better facilities and the need for a comprehensive regulatory framework to ensure their safety and well-being. The Delhi government’s proactive approach and the involvement of student representatives in the law-making process indicate a commitment to addressing these issues effectively.

In addition to Atishi, BJP leader Jaya Prada also met with the students at the protest site, reflecting the bipartisan concern over the incident and the need for immediate action to prevent such tragedies in the future.

This incident underscores the critical need for stringent regulations and oversight of coaching institutes to ensure the safety and welfare of students who come to Delhi from various parts of the country with dreams of clearing competitive exams like UPSC.

The promised measures by the Delhi government, if implemented effectively, could bring significant relief to thousands of students and their families, ensuring that such a tragedy is not repeated.
