In a recent address at the 'International Legal Conference 2024' hosted by the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC), Attorney General of India R Venkataramani emphasised the urgent need for radical changes in the lawmaking process. He highlighted the importance of not only enacting laws but also ensuring their effective implementation and relevance in a rapidly changing world.

Venkataramani stressed the pivotal role of legal practitioners in enhancing service quality across diverse sectors. He called for a re-evaluation of archaic legal principles and procedural inefficiencies to adapt to the evolving landscape of the legal sector.

The Attorney General advocated for a more connected approach between legal service provision and policy making. He proposed a loop that integrates people, representatives, policy-making, inputs, and insights, emphasising the need for a holistic and interconnected approach.

Furthermore, Venkataramani underscored the transformative potential of technology and innovation in reshaping law and governance. He urged for collective introspection and innovation to harness technology's potential in revolutionising the approach to law and justice administration.

Senior advocate Lalit Bhasin, President of the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) and Founder Chairman of SEPC, echoed Venkataramani's sentiments. Bhasin emphasised the urgent need to address the large backlog of pending cases in India, which currently stands at five crore.

Bhasin called for enhanced facilitation of case disposal and rationalisation of laws to streamline the legal process. He advocated for the removal of obsolete laws, including those dating back to the 1800s, and emphasised the importance of reducing delays in mediation and settlement cases.

Looking ahead, Bhasin stressed the crucial role of the legislative department of the Ministry of Law and Justice in the rationalisation process. He emphasised the need to focus on bringing justice by removing notorious laws and reducing delays in mediation and settlement.

Finally, Venkataramani and Bhasin emphasised the importance of transforming the lawmaking process and legal sector to ensure fairness, efficiency, and relevance in today's changing world.
