Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani arrived in India on Monday to co-chair the 5th India-Bahrain High Joint Commission meeting with External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the update on X, saying, “Warm welcome to FM Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani of the Kingdom of Bahrain. He will be co-chairing the 5th India-Bahrain High Joint Commission meeting with EAM Dr S Jaishankar. This visit offers an opportunity to build on the positive momentum in India-Bahrain relations.”

During his visit, Dr Alzayani will meet with External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar before departing from India later on Monday.

Dr Alzayani’s visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations, following Dr Jaishankar’s visit to Bahrain in December last year, during which both sides co-chaired the 4th India-Bahrain High Joint Commission meeting.

During the previous meeting, India and Bahrain agreed to broaden cooperation in the education sector. The Indian side welcomed more Bahraini students wishing to pursue higher studies in India’s premier institutions.

Both nations also stressed the importance of finalising a Memorandum of Understanding between the two governments to enhance collaboration in education.

The two countries also agreed to deepen cooperation on consular issues. They welcomed the decision to establish a Joint Consular Committee to discuss matters of mutual interest and to strengthen coordination in consular affairs.

India acknowledged that the bilateral security dialogue and the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) on combating international terrorism are key mechanisms for institutionalising security cooperation, including in the area of Cybersecurity.

Cultural ties between India and Bahrain also continue to grow. The two sides agreed to renew their Cultural Exchange Programme and to explore new initiatives to promote people-to-people connections and mutual understanding.

India and Bahrain share long-standing and friendly relations characterised by political goodwill, strong economic engagement, and cultural linkages.

The presence of nearly 332,000 Indian nationals in Bahrain comprising almost a quarter of the country’s 1.5 million population remains a vital bridge between the two nations, serving as a cornerstone of their partnership.
