Bajrang Punia Slams Police Over Tear Gas Use on Protesters.

The standoff between farmers and the police at the Shambhu border has once again brought attention to the ongoing tensions surrounding farmers' protests in India.

On a day marked by heightened tension, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher announced the suspension of their march after a standoff with the police. The protestors were met with forceful resistance from the authorities, including the use of tear gas, which led to sharp reactions from various political figures, including Congress leader Bajrang Punia.

Bajrang Punia, a prominent wrestler and political figure, voiced his concerns over the police’s heavy-handed approach. He questioned the justification for using tear gas on peaceful farmers and raised the issue of the Shambhu border being treated as though it were a border with Pakistan.

"On one hand, the government is saying that we are not stopping the farmers, but on the other hand, they are using tear gas and other forceful methods. It is being treated as if it is the Pakistan border," Punia said, expressing his outrage over the situation.

He also criticised the government's stance, asking whether politicians face similar restrictions when protesting in Delhi. Punia, who has consistently shown support for farmers’ rights, reiterated the farmers' demand for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops and urged the government to honour its commitments.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher also voiced his discontent, accusing the police of misleading the public and inflating the scale of the protest. “The Haryana Police is misleading the public. How can 100 people walking on foot be considered a security threat to the country?

Why have you blocked the border for the last 10 months?” Pandher asked, questioning the police’s rationale for preventing the farmers from marching. He expressed concern over the treatment of farmers, who have been struggling for months to have their demands addressed by the government.

The protest itself was triggered by the farmers’ insistence on marching to Delhi despite the authorities’ objections. The farmers had gathered at the Shambhu border in Haryana, planning to continue their march towards the national capital, where they hoped to voice their demands for fair agricultural practices, including the assurance of MSP.

However, their path was blocked by the police, who insisted that the farmers could not proceed without prior permission from the government. Despite this, the farmers remained firm in their resolve.

During the standoff, tensions ran high as the police attempted to control the situation. A farmer leader, addressing the police at the site, made a heartfelt appeal for peace and the right to protest. "SP Sahab, we want to march to Delhi peacefully; we request you not to block our protest; please give us the road.

We should be allowed to move ahead. Our voice should not be suppressed by these iron and stone barriers," the farmer leader pleaded. This appeal reflected the frustration and desperation of the farmers, who have been engaged in prolonged protests to secure their rights.

As the situation unfolded, farmer leader Pandher confirmed that the 'Jatha', a group of 101 farmers marching towards Delhi, would suspend its plans for the day. He added that 17 to 18 people had reportedly been injured during the clash, and a press conference would soon be held to inform the public of the next steps.

The farmers’ decision to pause their march did not, however, signify the end of their protest. They continue to demand the fulfilment of their key issues, including guaranteed MSP for their produce and better conditions for farmers across the country.
