The neighbouring country’s reversal is said to be Bangladesh government’s image makeover move in the international arena as the incident of vandalism has drawn criticism from several countries.

The interim government is observing with deep concern that certain individuals and groups are attempting vandalism and arson in various institutions and establishments across the country.

Hours after India called the demolition of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence a “regrettable” incident, the Bangladesh government reversed its yesterday’s position and said that acts of vandalism and arson across the country will be firmly resisted.

Sending a note to India on Thursday, Bangladesh government claimed the violent act of vandalism at Rahman’s house was a fallout of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s “provocative” speech on social media platforms.

The neighbouring country’s reversal is said to be Bangladesh government’s image makeover move in the international arena as the incident of vandalism has drawn criticism from several countries.

“The interim government is observing with deep concern that certain individuals and groups are attempting vandalism and arson in various institutions and establishments across the country. The government will firmly resist such activities,” the Bangladesh government said in a statement issued on Thursday night.

Earlier on Thursday, India said the act of vandalism at the residence of Rahman should be strongly condemned.

“It is regrettable that the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a symbol of the heroic resistance of the people of Bangladesh against the forces of occupation and oppression, was destroyed on February 5,” said spokesperson of the India’s Ministry of External Affairs Randhir Jaiswal in New Delhi.

In its note to India following the demolition of Bangabandhu’s residence, Bangladesh government requested India not to allow Hasina to carry out her political activities using India’s soil. However, Thursday’s statement by the Bangladesh government did not mention anything related to Hasina’s speech.

Around 9 pm on Wednesday, Hasina made her first in-person appearance since she is living in exile in India, addressing virtually to her party’s supporters on social media platforms.
