Bangladesh army chief urges vigilance, unity amid unrest

He highlighted the army’s critical role in maintaining stability during this period of political and social turmoil, urging personnel to uphold these values while carrying out their duties.

A highly anticipated meeting took place recently at the Army Headquarters in Cantonment, where the Chief of Army Staff (CAS), Waker-Uz-Zaman addressed senior officers amid ongoing unrest in Bangladesh. His speech emphasised the need for the army to remain composed and vigilant despite recent “internal and external” provocations.
 
In his address, he outlined 21 key points.
 
The CAS remarked, “We are engaged in a war where no weapons are being used. Our strength lies in morality, wisdom, respect, and prudence (Hikmah).”
 
He highlighted the army’s critical role in maintaining stability during this period of political and social turmoil, urging personnel to uphold these values while carrying out their duties.
 
He further cautioned, “We must not be swayed by any provocation.”
 
The CAS also revealed, “I recently met with a US senator who expressed concerns about the rise of Islamist extremists in Bangladesh.” He underscored the potential security threats facing Bangladesh, emphasising the need for vigilance to counteract any extremist influences that might exploit the current instability.
 
 “There are concerns about a disinformation campaign targeting the army,” he pointed put referring to a buzz of coup in the Army. He urged all personnel to remain alert against propaganda aimed at undermining the military’s credibility and to strengthen public confidence through the dissemination of accurate information.
 
Reaffirming the military’s commitment to democratic governance, he stated, “Our true victory will come the day power is handed over to the elected government, and all army personnel return to the cantonments.”
 
Through this speech, the CAS conveyed a clear directive for the army to remain calm, united, and vigilant. He asserted that by adhering to discipline and proper directives, the army could help navigate the nation through this turbulent period and emerge stronger than ever.
