Sources reported that the gruesome discovery was made in an apartment located in Sanjeeva Garden, New Town, Kolkata.

Kolkata police have discovered the dismembered body of Anwarul Azim Anar, a Bangladeshi Member of Parliament, eight days after he was reported missing.

Anar, representing the Jhenaidah-4 constituency, had traveled to Kolkata on May 12 for medical treatment and was staying with a friend in Baranagar.

The gruesome discovery was made in an apartment in Sanjeeva Garden, New Town, reportedly owned by an excise duty official.

Initial investigations suggest the murder was premeditated, according to Kolkata police.

The body parts were found in various locations within the apartment, adding to the complexity of the case.

Bangladesh's Home Minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, relayed information from an Indian Deputy Inspector General (DIG) confirming the body's recovery but emphasised that detailed information is still forthcoming.

The Inspector General of Bangladesh Police stated that they are working closely with their Kolkata counterparts to piece together the events leading up to Anar's death.

Abdur Rauf, Anar's personal secretary, mentioned that the family is in Dhaka, anxiously awaiting visa approval to travel to India. They have not received official confirmation about Anar's demise.

Anar had disappeared on May 13 after leaving his friend’s residence to meet someone.

Although messages from his phone indicated he was travelling to New Delhi, his whereabouts remained unknown until the body was found.

A senior official from the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata noted that Anar's friend had lodged a police complaint when he did not return.

The case has taken a grim turn with suspicions of a connection to gold smuggling. Both Indian and Bangladeshi authorities are probing this angle as part of their investigation.

Bangladesh police Inspector General commented on the ongoing efforts to unravel the motive behind the murder.

“We are yet to receive specific information, but we are exploring all possible leads, including the possibility of gold smuggling,” he said.

The shocking incident has sparked outrage and concern in both countries.
