The Baramati Lok Sabha constituency was embroiled in controversy as allegations of cash distribution to voters surfaced ahead of the polling.
The Pune police took action on Tuesday, registering a non-cognizable offence against five individuals following accusations made by the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar).
According to an official statement, the alleged incident occurred in Bhor town of the district.
NCP leader Rohit Pawar accused individuals associated with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP of distributing cash to voters.
This prompted the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) to file a formal complaint with the Election Commission (EC) against what they deemed as illicit practices.
The battle for the Baramati Lok Sabha seat intensified as NCP (SP) candidate Supriya Sule, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP's Sunetra Pawar found themselves entangled in this controversy.
The familial ties between Supriya Sule and Ajit Pawar added an extra layer of complexity to the situation.
Pune Superintendent of Police, Pankaj Deshmukh, confirmed the registration of the non-cognizable offence against the accused.
He stated that the allegations revolved around cash distribution in Bhor during the night preceding the polling day.
In response, Ajit Pawar vehemently denied the allegations, asserting his party's innocence. He emphasized that it is the Election Commission's responsibility to investigate such matters thoroughly.
Meanwhile, Supriya Sule expressed dismay at the situation, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the allegations and the reported incidents of intimidation.
