Mattel has released a special edition Diwali Barbie Doll, designed by Indian fashion designer Anita Dongre, ahead of Diwali on October 31.
This new Barbie Signature figurine showcases traditional Indian attire with a contemporary touch, incorporating elements like a patterned lehenga skirt, a floral koti (vest), and a choli (cropped top).
The outfit, named the “Moonlight Bloom set,” is adorned with floral motifs of dahlias, jasmine, and Indian lotus, symbolising strength and beauty. The doll also features sparkling earrings and gold bangles, representing the festive radiance of Diwali.
Anita Dongre expressed her excitement over this project, noting it was an opportunity to bring Indian culture and fashion to a global audience.
She shared her personal connection, reminiscing about not having a Barbie during her childhood as it wasn’t available in India at the time.
Designing this special Barbie became her way of finally owning one, which made it all the more meaningful.
Dongre also highlighted her aim to create a design that would resonate with young girls globally, incorporating a modern take on traditional Indian attire like the Rajasthani koti.
The Barbie Diwali doll is available for purchase at major retailers, including Target, Amazon, Walmart, and Mattel’s own website, priced at $40.
The doll comes packaged in a decorative box featuring Dongre’s signature motifs and matching the dark blue colour of Barbie’s dress.
