Mohan Bhagwat says Ram temple does not define Hindu leader.

In a speech the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat gave in Pune recently he said something that merits much reflection about leadership and religion.

Addressing a lecture series on ‘Vishwaguru Bharat,’ Bhagwat said the Ram temple construction does not define the Hindu leader.

He briefed the House by saying that although the construction of the Ram temple is also a very sensitive and pious issue for the Hindus then it should not be considered as the only criteria for the leadership of the community.

The RSS chief said that leadership is not merely about such gestures and must be anchored in a national agenda of the people. He pointed out the fact that Hindus have always considered the construction of Ram temple as significant, but just building it does not take one to leadership.

Bhagwat went on to say that India should aim at being a ‘Vishwaguru’ to present a model of the world to others with the idea that one can live with people of other religions.

He reiterated that the idea for India’s future should be based on the ‘idea of India’ and should aim to hold together various sects and ideologies which are reconcilable. Instead of giving in to hate, malevolence and division that he said have in a usual course being a source of strife.

The applicant mentioned negative genotypes in India earlier that tried to establish the split, emphasizing that those negative qualities are not typical of India today because the state’s advantage is that it can eliminate such threats.

He also answered the questions raised concerning the affairs of minorities in India at another programme in Pune. Poor nations of the world often tell India not to forget any efforts in favour of their minority communities.

However, attention must also pay to the safety and rights of minorities in other countries. This idea was broadening on global issues. He further emphasized that India's priorities must remain focused on its own cultural values and not sway by external pressures.
