K-9 Vajra, Fighter Jet Engines: Defence Deals Awaits Nod

The Indian government is gearing up to finalise several significant 'Make in India' defence projects, including the procurement of additional K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers and fighter aircraft engines, once the ongoing elections conclude.

These deals, originally slated for approval in March, were postponed due to the electoral process.

According to a defence official, the Cabinet Committee on Security will deliberate on various projects, including the K-9 Vajra howitzers and engines for the Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft.

The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will play a pivotal role in manufacturing these engines, valued at approximately Rs 20,000 crore. HAL's facility in Koraput, Odisha, specialises in the production of these engines with a significant focus on indigenous development.

The Indian Air Force regularly acquires these engines for its Su-30 MKI fleet. However, due to the pandemic and other global factors, there has been a backlog in fulfilling these requirements.

Additionally, the proposal to procure 100 more K-9 Vajra SP howitzers is expected to be discussed, considering the Indian Army's demand for these advanced artillery systems.

Initially introduced to address the army's needs in the plains and desert regions, the K-9 Vajra howitzers have proven effective, particularly in the challenging terrain of Ladakh.

Alongside procurement plans, various defence research and development initiatives by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) await government clearance.

In a recent meeting, the Centre approved projects for acquiring 61 close-in weapon systems and High Powered Radars before the enforcement of the model code of conduct.

Additionally, the Defence Ministry, along with the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard, has submitted proposals for inclusion in the government's 100-day and 6-month agendas.

Government officials have affirmed that once the election process concludes, these projects will move forward swiftly. Notably, ongoing indigenous defence programmes, such as the Rs 65,000 crore 97 LCA Mark 1A aircraft programme, highlight India's commitment to bolstering its indigenous defence capabilities.
