Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is set to become the state’s first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party after being elected leader of the BJP legislature party on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Nitish Kumar, who heads the JD(U) and was recently elected to the Rajya Sabha, tendered his resignation from the post of Chief Minister, paving the way for a political transition in the state.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who was appointed by the BJP parliamentary board as the central observer for the election of the legislature party leader, announced that ‘Samrat Choudhary has been unanimously elected as the BJP legislature party leader’.

The BJP currently holds the position of the single largest party in the 243-member Bihar Legislative Assembly with 89 MLAs, giving it a significant role in the formation of the next government.

Following his election, Choudhary expressed gratitude to the central leadership of the BJP for entrusting him with the responsibility. He said the position was not merely an office, but an opportunity to serve the people of Bihar and work towards fulfilling their expectations and aspirations with dedication and integrity.

In a post on social media platform X, he said he would strive to take Bihar to new heights of development, good governance, and prosperity under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of party leaders, including Bihar BJP president Nitin Nabin.

Choudhary, who represents the Tarapur constituency, joined the BJP in 2017 after spending around 12 years with the RJD and JD(U), marking a significant political shift in his career.

With his election as BJP legislature party leader, he is now expected to be formally chosen as the leader of the NDA legislature party in Bihar, which will pave the way for the formation of the new government in the state.
