BJP leader Parvesh Verma has accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal of breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in East Kidwai Nagar.
A formal complaint was lodged with the Delhi Police, alleging that Kejriwal distributed chairs to Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in the New Delhi constituency to influence voters unlawfully.
The complaint, filed by Sandeep Singh, Verma’s election agent, claims the act amounts to bribery and violates multiple laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to Singh, this distribution of goods demonstrates unethical practices by the AAP to sway voter sentiment.
In a statement, Verma's office called the act a “blatant disregard” for the MCC and accused Kejriwal of using material goods to manipulate voters.
The complaint also demands a thorough investigation and the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Kejriwal and AAP workers involved in the alleged act.
“The AAP worker carrying a large number of chairs in a trolley admitted that he was sent by Arvind Kejriwal to distribute them,” the complaint alleged. Video footage purportedly showing the act has also been submitted as evidence.
Verma’s office urged authorities to take swift action, stating that such practices are a direct violation of democratic principles. The complaint called for strict penalties to deter similar incidents in the future.
With Delhi’s assembly polls just two weeks away, the allegations have added a contentious element to the campaign. The elections will take place on February 5 in a single phase, and votes will be counted on February 8.
