The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The BJP announced plans for a candlelight rally to Banerjee’s residence in south Kolkata on Friday.
Sukanta Majumdar, the BJP state president, criticised the state’s handling of law and order, alleging its failure. He pointed to the recent incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a woman postgraduate trainee doctor was reportedly raped and murdered last week, sparking widespread protests.
Majumdar stated that the BJP’s women’s wing will lead the candlelight march from Hazra Crossing to Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat. This demonstration is a response to the vandalism that occurred at RG Kar Hospital early on Thursday. The BJP also plans to stage a sit-in near the hospital and conduct several protest events across the state starting Friday.
The protests will include road blockades, with the BJP emphasising that the vandalism and ransacking of the hospital’s Emergency ward, where junior doctors were protesting the alleged crime, are unacceptable.
"We will hold a candlelight march to the chief minister's residence to protest the vandalism," Majumdar said, outlining the party’s protest strategy.
