BJP Spokesperson CR Kesavan has sharply criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her recent controversial remarks. In a statement made on Thursday, Kesavan called for the Supreme Court to take suo moto cognizance of Banerjee’s speech, which he described as “dangerous” and inflammatory.
The controversy began when Mamata Banerjee spoke at a public event in Kolkata on Wednesday, addressing the BJP’s call for a 12-hour bandh in Bengal. In her speech, Banerjee warned that if Bengal were to be set on fire, other states including Assam, North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi would also be engulfed in flames.
She accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using his party to incite violence over a recent high-profile rape and murder case involving a Kolkata woman doctor.
Kesavan condemned Banerjee’s words as a direct threat and an attempt to stir unrest across the nation. He emphasised that such language could potentially disturb peace and harmony in India. According to him, the Chief Minister's remarks reflect a troubling trend of divisive rhetoric that could escalate tensions throughout the country.
In addition to his criticism of Banerjee’s speech, Kesavan took aim at her record on women’s issues. He accused Banerjee of failing to provide justice for women, describing her statement as a betrayal of the trust and faith that women had placed in her leadership. Kesavan suggested that Banerjee’s failure to address public outrage effectively has only contributed to the problems in Bengal.
In response to Banerjee’s comments, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also weighed in. Sarma expressed his disapproval on social media, warning Banerjee not to threaten Assam or use divisive politics that could harm the country. He urged her to refrain from making inflammatory statements that do not align with responsible leadership.
