BJP files complaint against Congress leader for alleged defamation

The BJP has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India against the Congress and its leader Vijay Wadettiwar, alleging dissemination of falsehoods and defamation directed at the BJP's Mumbai North Central nominee, Ujjwal Nikam, a prominent lawyer.

Wadettiwar, serving as the leader of the opposition in the Maharashtra legislative assembly, reportedly labeled Nikam as "anti-national," asserting that Nikam concealed the truth surrounding the demise of then Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare during the 26/11 terror attack.

Wadettiwar implied that Karkare was not slain by the bullet of terrorist Ajmal Kasab but rather by a bullet from an RSS-affiliated policeman.

These claims stem from the contents of the book 'Who Killed Karkare' penned by retired police officer SM Mushriff.

Responding to these allegations, Nikam condemned Wadettiwar's remarks, urging responsible conduct from political leaders, especially in refraining from statements that could benefit adversarial nations.

Ashish Shelar, Mumbai BJP president, dismissed Wadettiwar's assertions as unfounded and malicious, aimed at tarnishing Nikam's reputation and stirring emotions.

The BJP has formally petitioned the Election Commission of India to take action against Wadettiwar, a prominent campaigner for the Congress, and the Congress party itself for propagating falsehoods.

Shelar reiterated that Kasab was lawfully sentenced to death for his role in the heinous attacks, emphasizing the thorough legal process that was followed.

Kasab, the sole surviving terrorist captured by Mumbai police during the 26/11 terror assault, was held accountable for the deaths of numerous innocent individuals and the injury of many more.

Additionally, Shelar questioned whether Uddhav Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), supports the controversial statements made by the Congress leader.

Ujjwal Nikam, a former special public prosecutor renowned for handling high-profile cases such as the Mumbai serial bomb blasts and the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, is making his political debut as the BJP candidate for the Mumbai North Central constituency.
