BJP MLAs staged a sit-in at the office of Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel on Tuesday, demanding the convening of a special session to table 14 pending Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports.
The protest was led by Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta, who presented a memorandum to the Speaker, urging him to call the special session without further delay.
Gupta accused the AAP government of displaying a lack of accountability by failing to table the CAG reports in the Assembly. The reports, which cover the audit of various departments for the period from 2017-18 to 2021-22, have been pending for two years, Gupta stated.
He emphasised that the failure to present these reports in the House not only undermines the constitutional rights of the Assembly members but also erodes public trust.
Citizens, Gupta argued, have a right to know how public funds are being utilised, and the government's delay in presenting these reports obstructs that transparency.
The BJP legislators have also taken legal action, approaching the Delhi High Court to direct the government to table the pending reports. Gupta noted that, in a hearing on December 24, the government informed the court that the reports had been sent to the Assembly Secretariat.
The next hearing is scheduled for January 9, Gupta added.
With elections for the 70-member Delhi Assembly due for February, the BJP has been urging the government to present the reports before the current five-year tenure ends.
The issue has sparked a significant political debate, with the BJP insisting that the delay in tabling the reports is a deliberate attempt to avoid accountability before the upcoming elections.
