The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday mocked the opposition INDIA bloc for a spelling error on a protest banner displayed in Parliament premises, saying those who could not even write “loktantra” correctly were now trying to lecture the nation on democracy.
The protest, led by several MPs of the opposition INDIA bloc, included Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. They gathered on the steps of the Parliament House complex to demonstrate against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by the Election Commission in poll-bound Bihar.
The opposition MPs held a large banner that read “SIR – loktantar par vaar” (attack on democracy) while raising slogans such as “Save democracy” and “Stop vote-bandi” outside Parliament’s Makar Dwar.
Taking a swipe at the opposition bloc, BJP IT department head Amit Malviya mocked the misspelling of the Hindi word for democracy. Sharing a picture on X, Malviya wrote in Hindi, “It’s loktantra, not loktantar.”

The BJP also posted an image of the protest, saying, “Those who do not know how to write ‘loktantra’ have come out to give lessons on democracy.”
Joining the criticism, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla targeted the Congress, accusing the party of being rooted in dynastic politics and authoritarian practices.
“Can't blame Congress. They can neither spell nor save ‘loktantra’. They believe in Parivar Tantra and Emergency! Surely, they can spell and save that,” Poonawalla wrote on X.
The INDIA bloc has been staging protests in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR exercise in Bihar, claiming the Election Commission’s move is an attempt to disenfranchise voters ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
