BJP’s big Bengal bet pays off, sets sights on 2029

“Out of 68 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes, we won 50. We also secured all 30 seats dominated by the Rajbanshi community and all 16 Scheduled Tribe seats. In urban areas, we won 28 of the 39 Assembly constituencies,” the leader said.

Riding on a strong performance in the recently concluded high-voltage West Bengal Assembly elections, the BJP has significantly expanded its footprint across the state, cutting across regional, social, and demographic divides.

According to the party’s post-election assessment, the BJP has taken leads in 29 out of the state’s 42 Lok Sabha seats—an outcome party leaders are calling a crucial stepping stone toward their ambitious target of securing 35 to 40 seats in the 2029 general elections.

The saffron party’s gains appear broad-based. It swept all eight Lok Sabha segments in North Bengal and performed strongly in western districts often categorised as economically backward. In a notable setback for the ruling TMC, the party failed to secure a single Assembly seat in nine districts, reinforcing claims made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the campaign.

A senior BJP leader said the party drew support from diverse social groups. “Out of 68 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes, we won 50. We also secured all 30 seats dominated by the Rajbanshi community and all 16 Scheduled Tribe seats. In urban areas, we won 28 of the 39 Assembly constituencies,” the leader said.

North Bengal and Hills
In districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, the BJP registered a clean sweep across 22 Assembly seats. Political observers attribute this to sustained grassroots engagement, particularly in tea garden areas, as well as consolidation of anti-TMC votes and alliances with regional players.

The Matigara-Naxalbari constituency stood out, where BJP candidate Anandamay Barman won by a margin exceeding 1 lakh votes, underlining the scale of the party’s surge.

Junglemahal region
In the western districts of Bankura, Purulia, and Jhargram, collectively known as Junglemahal, the BJP emerged dominant across all 25 seats. Analysts point to strong anti-incumbency sentiment against the TMC and the perception of the BJP as the only viable alternative, with the Left Front and Congress failing to regain lost ground.

Interestingly, results from several minority-dominated booths suggest a shift in voting patterns, though observers caution that this trend requires deeper analysis.

In the industrial district of West Bardhaman, the BJP won all nine Assembly seats. Local dynamics varied between urban and rural areas. In Asansol North, the defeat of TMC minister Moloy Ghatak has been linked by some observers to alleged discrepancies in voter rolls, while in Barabani, dissatisfaction among rural voters and local-level issues were cited as key factors.

The BJP’s sweep of all 16 seats in East Medinipur has been widely attributed to the influence of the Adhikari family, particularly Suvendu Adhikari. Their strong local presence and extensive outreach reportedly played a decisive role. Political analysts also highlight internal factionalism within the TMC as a contributing factor to its defeat in the district.

Observers cite a combination of factors behind the BJP’s rise—consolidation of anti-incumbency sentiment, organisational expansion, outreach among marginalised communities, and strategic positioning in both rural and urban constituencies. Allegations of corruption, local-level grievances, and internal divisions within the TMC also appear to have influenced voter behaviour in several regions.

While the BJP views the results as a mandate for expansion, political analysts note that the durability of this support will depend on governance delivery and sustained engagement ahead of the next general elections.
