West Bengal BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar had a narrow escape from injury when his car was involved in an accident on NH-34 in Shantipur, Nadia district, on Sunday.
According to the police, the accident occurred when Majumdar's car, attempting to overtake a bus, collided with the trailing pilot car. While Majumdar emerged unscathed, three occupants of the pilot car sustained injuries.
Providing his account of the incident, Majumdar explained that his car collided with a guard rail set up by the police on the same side of the highway where the bus was blocking traffic.
In the process, the trailing pilot car struck his vehicle. Despite the collision, Majumdar escaped unharmed, but the occupants of the pilot car were injured. Majumdar, who represents the Balurghat constituency in the Lok Sabha, was returning from a football tournament where he was the chief guest.
He called for an inquiry to ascertain whether there was a conspiracy to target opposition BJP leaders in the state. A police official attributed the accident to congestion caused by ongoing road repair works, with the bus partially obstructing one side of the road.
However, the BJP's West Bengal unit alleged that the collision was a deliberate attack on Majumdar's life by a police pilot car allegedly affiliated with the TMC.
The party shared images of the incident and credited the support of the people of Bengal for Majumdar's survival. The injured security personnel were reportedly admitted to a hospital.
In response, the West Bengal Police refuted the BJP's claims, stating that Majumdar's escort vehicle, belonging to the CISF, had collided with his car near Gobindapur within the Santipur police station area.
The police expressed regret over attempts to distort facts and announced stern legal action against those spreading misinformation and trying to incite public sentiment.
The incident underscores the tense political atmosphere in West Bengal and raises questions about the safety of opposition leaders in the state.
