In a direct retort to the Opposition, eleven Bharatiya Janata Party MPs have penned a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressing "full faith" in his stewardship and raising serious objections to the "attitude" of Congress counterparts who recently challenged his authority.
This move comes as Parliament’s budget session faces continued disruption for a second week, with opposition leaders alleging the Speaker favours the treasury benches and contemplating a no-confidence motion against him.
Tension peaked after Birla denied permission to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi to read from a book regarding the 2020 India-China border standoff, a decision that sparked a major showdown and led Prime Minister Narendra Modi to cancel his scheduled Lok Sabha speech.
In their letter, the BJP MPs lauded Birla for displaying "patience and perseverance to uphold the dignity" of the House despite "unfortunate and regrettable" events, specifically alleging that some opposition members entered the Well, climbed on the Speaker's table, and tore papers.
They even urged Birla to take the "strictest possible action" against those involved in such "heinous acts." This correspondence follows a blunt letter from Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who characterised being prevented from speaking on national security matters as a "blot on democracy." With eight Congress MPs already suspended for the remainder of the session, BJP MP Anurag Thakur accused the Opposition of insulting democracy, deepening the profound chaos and distrust, thereby paralysing the legislature.
