Blackout in Jammu, Pathankot as air defence thwarts Pak drones

Explosions rocked Jammu on Friday evening as Indian air defence systems intercepted Pakistani drones during a widespread blackout.

Pakistani drones sighted in Jammu, Samba and Pathankot sector.

Sirens blared in Jammu for the second consecutive day as Pakistan intensified its shelling in various regions of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Poonch and Uri on Friday evening.

The blasts were heard throughout Jammu, and the city continued to experience a blackout for the second day in a row. The rising tensions between the two nations prompted a high-level security meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who convened with the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force to assess the situation.

This escalation follows Pakistan's missile and drone attacks launched on Thursday, which targeted multiple regions in India, including Jammu, Rajasthan, and Punjab. All of the incoming threats were successfully intercepted and neutralized by India's air defence systems.

Amid these heightened security concerns and the ongoing shelling, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah issued an urgent appeal to the public, advising people to stay indoors and avoid the streets. He urged residents to find a safe space in their homes or nearby locations and refrain from spreading rumors.

"It’s my earnest appeal to everyone in & around Jammu please stay off the streets, stay at home or at the nearest place you can comfortably stay at for the next few hours. Ignore rumours, don’t spread unsubstantiated or unverified stories & we will get through this together," Abdullah tweeted.

Meanwhile, explosions continued to reverberate through Jammu and the surrounding regions, as India's air defence successfully intercepted and neutralized incoming Pakistani drones over Samba.

The air defence operations were conducted amid the ongoing blackout, adding to the tense atmosphere. Red streaks from the intercepted drones lit up the sky as India's defence systems worked to prevent further damage from the aerial threats.

Drones sighted and shelling underway at multiple locations across the border. Here's a list of the 11 affected areas so far:

  • Samba (Jammu and Kashmir) – Shelling and drone activity reported.
  • Kupwara (North Kashmir) – Intense artillery fire ongoing along the Line of Control (LoC).
